In this piece, Rebecca Godar argues that data is an instrument of power in our society and within our systems, and as such it requires reflective attention to be paid to the design and operation of those systems by strategic leaders to ensure that data use is ethical and explicitly informed by values. This piece sits alongside another TCE resource: a discussion of using data to explore disproportionality within our systems, and the need to challenge our own assumptions and biases when using data.
